The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts has released the final list of eligible voters for the upcoming by-election of the Maldives Media Council (MMC).
According to the Ministry, a total of 78 individuals have been registered to vote in the election, which will fill three vacant seats on the Council.
A total of eight candidates are contesting — four representing the media sector and four from the general public. The vacancies were created following the resignation of three members during the current term.
The Ministry stated that only individuals representing media organizations are eligible to vote in MMC elections.
The MMC is an independent statutory body mandated to promote and protect freedom of expression and freedom of the press in the Maldives. It is also responsible for addressing public complaints against print and online media content, ensuring ethical standards, and facilitating the development of responsible journalism in the country.
The Council comprises 15 members in total — eight representing the media and seven from the general public — with the aim of ensuring balanced and inclusive oversight of the media landscape.
